Water Softener Frequently Asked Questions
Can a water softener remove iron and rust stains from well water?
Standard ion-exchange water softeners can remove moderate levels of clear-water iron, usually up to 2 to 3 parts per million. However, they cannot filter out red-water iron, iron bacteria, or hydrogen sulfide (the cause of rotten-egg odors). For wells with heavy iron or sulfur, we recommend pairing the water softener with a specialized air-injection iron filter or dedicated whole-home sediment pre-filter.
How long does a residential water softener typically last?
A high-efficiency, on-demand water softener generally lasts between 10 to 15 years. The lifespan depends heavily on incoming water quality. Homes on heavily chlorinated municipal water or untreated well water with high iron, may see the ion-exchange resin break down closer to the 8-10 year mark.
Routine maintenance, such as preventing salt bridge, keeping the valves clean, and using a resin cleaner annually will maximize the lifespan of your new system.
Does every home need a water softener?
No, not every home needs a water softener. A softening system is only necessary if your incoming water supply carries high concentrations of dissolved calcium and magnesium. If your water is already naturally soft or pre-treated by a municipal utility, adding a water softener is an unnecessary expense. If you do not notice any of the signs on your fixtures or plumbing, a water softener may not be needed for your home.
What are the signs my home needs a water softener?
The clearest signs of hard water include chalky white mineral buildup around faucets and showerheads, cloudy or spotted glassware straight from the dishwasher, and stubborn soap scum that coats tubs and shower doors. You may also notice stiff or scratchy laundry, and chronically dry, itchy skin after bathing. Over time, untreated minerals accumulate inside your plumbing, leading to popping or rumbling noises from sediment in your water heater and gradually reducing water pressure. If you are experiencing any of these issues, a water softener may be the solution.
