The one word that describes Kingdom Air is outstanding. They replaced our water heater, A/C unit and furnace. What is the difference between a standard hose bib and a frost-free spigot?
A standard hose bib has its shut-off valve located right at the exterior wall, leaving water exposed to freezing temperatures during cold Indiana winters. A frost-free (frost-proof) sillcock typically extends 6 to 14 inches into the inside of your home, keeping the actual shut-off mechanism warm. When you shut off a frost-free spigot, remaining water drains out of the stem, protecting your pipes from freezing and bursting during winter, provided you disconnect your garden hose before the first freeze.
Do I need to disconnect my hose during the winter? Why?
It is recommended to always disconnect your garden hose before winter temperatures drop below freezing, even if you have a modern frost-free spigot. Leaving a hose attached creates a vacuum seal that keeps water trapped inside the brass and copper stem running through your exterior wall.
When outdoor temperatures freeze, trapped water expands. Because it has nowhere to escape, extreme pressure builds until it splits the fittings inside your wall cavity, basement, or crawlspace.
Can I install a hydrant in the middle of a yard, near a garden or carport?
Yes, Kingdom Air can install a freeze-proof yard hydrant virtually anywhere on your property, including the middle of a lawn, alongside a garden bed, or adjacent to a carport, as long as we can trench a water line to the location.
