Frequently Asked Water Heater Questions

What is the difference between standard (tanked) water heaters, and tankless water heaters?

A standard water heater stores hot water in a tank, usually between 30 and 80 gallons, and keeps that water heated continuously throughout the day whether it is being used or not. When you turn on a shower, faucet, or appliance, hot water is pulled from the tank. Once the stored hot water is used up, the tank needs time to refill and reheat. Standard water heaters are typically cheaper to install, though last half as long, needing replaced around 8 to 12 years after installation.

A tankless water heater (commonly referred to as an on-demand water heater), does not store hot water in a tank. Instead, these units heat water only when you need it. When you turn on a hot water tap, water passes through the unit and is heated as it flows. Tankless water heaters typically cost more to install though can last twice as long, usually lasting 15 years or longer.

Tankless water heaters are the premium option when it comes to installing a new hot water heater in your home. Tankless on-demand units can provide continuous hot water without running out, take up less space, and are typically more energy efficient when properly sized for the home.

However, tanked water heaters are still considered the standard in existing homes due to being more affordable, and are a common choice for a straightforward replacement. If upfront costs are the most important factor, then tanked would be the more budget friendly option.

Yes, most homes can be converted to a tankless system. The conversion requires adjusting your gas lines or electrical configuration and modifying the venting, which our skilled technicians can complete safely in a single visit.

Standard tanked water heaters last around 8 to 12 years, while tankless water heaters can often last 15 to 20 years or more. These times can vary depending on the water quality, usage, maintenance, and installation conditions. In areas of Southwest Indiana with harder water (such as Washington and Linton), sediment buildup can sometimes shorten the life of the tank. Water softeners are often paired with water heaters to extend equipment life.

If your hot water is running out faster than you are used to, the cause could be a failing heating element, a broken or corroded dip tube, or thermostat issues. For homes in Southwest Indiana, mineral buildup from hard water can greatly impact performance over time. If you are noticing new hot water issues, a plumber can let you know whether maintenance, repair, or replacement is required.

Popping, rumbling, or banging noises often happen when sediment builds up at the bottom of a tanked water heater. As the burner or heating element warms the water, trapped sediment can cause noise and reduce efficiency.

If your water heater is leaking, turn off the power or gas to the unit if it is safe to do so, shut off the water supply valve to the water heater, and contact a plumber immediately. A small leak from a fitting, valve, or connection may be repairable, but leaking from the bottom of the tank itself usually meant the water heater needs to be replaced. Small leaks can quickly become a major problem if the underlying issue isn’t addressed, and to avoid property damage turning off the water and calling a plumber at the first signs of a leak are a must.
