How to Survive the Indiana Allergy Season

Allergy season is in full swing here in Indiana—and if you are anything like us, you’re probably feeling the effects! Even some of our own technicians and office staff are sniffling and sneezing while out and about. Allergy season can be a real pain, but there are ways to fight back and make sure you’re breathing easy no matter where you are. If you’ve ever wondered how to survive the Indiana allergy season, then keep reading!

Tips for Preventing Allergies While Out & About or at Work

Whether you’re running errands, working in the office, or just enjoying some fresh air, these tips can help keep allergies at bay:

Limiting Allergies Outside

  • When taking over-the-counter drugs (always consult a doctor – not medical advice) always keep in mind that some medications take a few weeks to reach peak effect. According to the Mayo Clinic, these drugs “work best when used consistently, at least during your allergy season”. Don’t just take your pills when you need them, take them before & after as well!
  • Check pollen forecasts. If high counts are expected, try to stay indoors and plan your outdoor time around rain showers, which can wash pollen away.
  • If you’ve spent an extended period of time outside, or performed tasks such as yardwork, consider changing clothes and showering once you come inside. This helps keep you from spreading allergens around your home or office.
  • Don’t forget your four legged friends! As dogs and cats go in and outside the home, their thick fur can easily track pollen and other allergens inside. If they roll on your carpet or lay in your bed, they may just be the cause for your sniffles. Bathing your pets does more than just giving them a shiny coat, it may help you breathe easier throughout the day.

Giving your pets a bath helps limit the allergens they bring in on their fur.

Limiting Allergies in Your Car

  • While you may enjoy riding with the top down or the sunroof open, if your allergies are severe it’s time to consider rolling those windows up! Driving with the windows open allow pollen spores and other allergens to blow into your car and stick, making you sneeze behind the wheel.
  • Use the air conditioner on recirculating mode so you are not pulling in allergens from the outside.
  • Ensure your car’s cabin air filter is checked (and not just overlooked) the next time you have an oil change.
  • Keeping your car dusted and vacuumed (at least once to twice a month during allergy season) keeps the allergies away while on the road.

Clean your car regularly to prevent the buildup of dust and allergens.

Limiting Allergies at Work

While at work, your avenues to reduce allergens may be few and far between, especially depending on where you work. However, there are still steps you can take to limit your seasonal allergies.

  • If working an office job
    • Consider purchasing a one room air purifier, or desk purifier, that can clean the air in your immediate vicinity.
    • Wipe down your desk and other surfaces daily! If the cleaning lady only comes in on Monday, by Friday your desk may be covered with a thin layer of allergens that can trigger your next allergy attack.
    • If your workspace has high humidity, see if you would be able to run a dehumidifier.
  • If out of the office
    • If you have a regular workspace or break area (for example) keep it clean and dusted! Breakrooms and locker areas that aren’t cleaned as frequent as other areas in a factory can build up dust quickly. Keeping a pack of wet wipes to dust your area can go a long way to keeping the air you breathe allergen free.
    • If you have part of your uniform (safety vest, helmet, jacket) that isn’t washed as frequently as your day to day wear, consider upping the frequency during peak allergy season.
    • Always be mindful of perfumes and scented products that could worsen allergies of others in shared workspaces.

Dusting and cleaning your workspace regularly helps prevent the buildup of dust and other allergens.

What You Can Do at Home to Ease Allergy Symptoms

Here are some simple and budget-friendly ways to improve indoor air quality in your own home:

  • Change your air filters regularly. As an HVAC company we say this all of the time, and for good reason! In terms of allergies, a dirty filter can blow dust and pollen right back into your living spaces, while a clean one is able to capture pollutants before they cycle through your home.
  • Ensure your vacuum’s air filter is washed (not just emptied) regularly during allergy season.
  • Wash bedding more frequently during peak season, and always shower before bed in fresh clothes to rinse away allergens from your hair and skin. (Again, don’t forget your pets bring in the same pollen you do!)
  • Keep windows closed! If suffering from allergies, remember that a cool breeze often carries with it many a sneeze. Keep pollen out, and your air conditioner running.

Change your air filter regularly to improve your home's air quality.
