Why Should You Install a Waterfurnace Geothermal Unit?
Geothermal systems are among the most environmentally conscious, efficient, and energy saving heating and cooling systems you can purchase. Unlike traditional HVAC systems that rely entirely on fossil fuels and outside air temperatures, geothermal units harness the stable underground temperature to heat and cool your home more efficiently.
If you’re asking, “Why should I install a geothermal system”, then keep reading.
- Lower Energy Bills – Geothermal systems can reduce your heating and cooling expenses by up to 70% compared to traditional HVAC systems.
- Consistent Energy Bills – Say goodbye to seasonal spikes in your utility costs! Unlike gas furnaces or outdoor heat pumps that struggle in extreme weather, geothermal systems provide steady, predictable energy usage all year long, so you won’t be surprised with temperatures drop or soar.
- Long Lifespan & Durability – With fewer moving parts and no exposure to outdoor elements such as rain, snow, or ice, geothermal units can often last up to ten years longer than a standard system.
- Quiet Operation – No noisy (and unsightly) outdoor compressor means a more peaceful home environment.
How Installing a Geothermal System Works - Horizontal vs Vertical Ground Loops
Unlike traditional HVAC systems, which rely on burning fuel or using outdoor air, WaterFurnace Geothermal systems transfer heat to and from the ground, where temperatures remain stable. The key component of this system is the ground loop, which circulates refrigerant fluid to exchange energy with the earth.
If your property or new construction doesn’t already have one of these loops, Kingdom Air can install one for you with your new system. There are two main types of ground loop systems Kingdom Air can can install, depending on your available space, ground conditions, and installation cost.
The basics of Horizontal Ground Loops vs Vertical Ground Loops.
Horizontal Geothermal Ground Loops
- Ideal for properties with plenty of land available for excavation.
- Requires trenches to be dug 4-6 feet deep where the loop pipes are laid out.
- More cost-effective for residential applications with sufficient space.
- Used when space is limited or soil conditions aren’t ideal for trenching.
- Well drilling equipment drills deep boreholes where the loop pipes are installed.
- Typically used on commercial buildings or homes on smaller lots.
The Basics of Geothermal
- Refrigerant/water moves through a loop of pipes buried underground.
- In the winter, the liquid heats up as it travels through the part of the loop buried underground.
- Once it gets back above the surface, the warmed water transfers heat into the building.
- The water or refrigerant cools after its heat is transferred to the home’s interior. It is then cycled through the loop again, beginning the process once more.
- In the summer, the system runs in reverse, the heat transferring to the dirt around the loop.
